The most common blockage that I faced some years back as a physical designer or STA engineer was, understanding the syntax and concepts of libraries, which is the heart of PNR and STA.

For eg. I never knew that STA internally breaks your entire design in 3 different types of models: Driver mode, Parasitics model and receiver model

I never knew, that flipflops can also be modelled using state-tables. State-table concept is very similar to finite state machine, where the current output or current state of output is dependent on previous state and current input state:

I never knew, you used to model flip-flop using an ‘ff’ attribute and it’s the most efficient way to model flipflop. Same with latches..you model latches using ‘latch’ attribute

And finally, the library itself is divided into 4 different types of groups, namely, library group, cell group, pin group and arc group. This makes it easy for an STA engineer to get respective attributes for respective groups. This is where get_attribute commands come from:
